Intermediate Course: Modelling Excavation Problems with DIANA

MODULE I-7:  Modelling Excavation Problems with DIANA

Couse Level:  Intermediate (English Language)

Continuing Professional Development: Constructeursregister: 2 KE/PE-punten*

Tuesday, 12th October (15:00>17:30 CEST)

Thursday, 14th October (15:00>17:30 CEST)

Cost: The cost of this course is €750.  Additional discounts can be organised for group attendance (more than three persons), for more information please contact us.

  • The aim of this course is to provide a general overview of the geotechnical challenges in modelling soil and soil-structure interaction by FEA and how DIANA can help engineers in overcoming them, with particular emphasis on excavation engineering applications in hard and soft soil.
  • Exercise: 2D Excavation(Insight)
  • Q&A

The learning objectives of this course are:

  • To recognize the characteristics of soils & rocks behavior
  • To explain the meaning of model parameters
  • To calculate the stress and strain response for simple continuum models
  • To recognize the capabilities and limitations of models
  • To evaluate the applicability of models in practical geotechnical applications
  • To calibrate the model parameters based on soil data including possible range and sensitivity analysis
  • To judge the results of geotechnical FEM models

Who Should Attend?  Practicing engineers, and academics with a minimum knowledge of DIANA

Course Format:  The course is divided into two sessions, each session will be approximately 2.5hrs in length, and will include lectures, live demos or insights, and discussions.   DIANA will be made available to participants for the duration of the course.

About the Tutor:

Marco BologninMarco Bolognin is a geotechnical consultant at DIANA FEA bv (The Netherlands). He is also pursuing a PhD at Delft University of Technology between the departments of Geosciences and Hydraulic Structures & Flood Risk. His research focuses on developing and validating numerical solutions based on MPM. His interdisciplinary research topic involves performing laboratory to engineering scale experiments for landslides and fluid flows, including their numerical simulation. He holds a MSc in structural engineering from University of Bologna.

* Continuing Professional Development
Registered (or chartered) designers, chartered engineers and registered construction supervisors (register-ontwerpers, register-constructeurs en register-toetsers) receive for this online course 2 points for permanent education or entry to the Constructeursregister . 2 KE/PE-point for the course.

If you fill in the points for permanent education online via My CR in the Constructeursregister, you can tick the announced online technical course on the list of activities. When the number of credits is assessed, this is checked by the assessment committee on the basis of the list of participants.
