Why UHPFRC?

We are excited to invite you to join us for this very special, one off interactive event. DIANA FEA and the Institute of Concrete and Science Technology (ICITECH) at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) come together to discuss all the latest innovations in this cutting edge concrete product.  

Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete ("UHPFRC") is very quickly proving itself to be the building material of the future. 

Not to be confused with Ultra High Performance Concrete ("UHPC"), or Fibre Reinforced Concrete ("FRC"), the combination of UHPC and fibre reinforcements, creates a high tensile strength with a more ductile behaviour, it has also been proved to have superior mechanical properties and energy absorption capacity.   

Initially, the high material cost, high energy consumption in its creation, and the embedded Co2 for UHPFRC, was not compatible with the global communities efforts to save energy and lower environmental impact.   However, a decade of research has resulted in an optimized application of binders and fibres with efficient packing models, resulting in a product which is more sustainable and cost effective.

MEET THE LECTURERS

Eduardo J Mezquida-AlcarazMSc Civil Engineering & PhD at Universitat Politècnica València (UPV), Spain 2021

Research interests include development of non-linear finite element modelling for concrete structures.

Recent investigations have focused on numerical modelling and experimental characterisation of UHPFRC and FRC for structural analysis.

Juan Navarro-Gregori

Associate Professor of Concrete Structures in the Dept. of Civil Construction Engineering, and Researcher in the Institute of Concrete and Science Technology (ICITECH) at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain.

Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley in 2006 and PhD at UPV in 2010.

His research interests include development of non-linear analysis procedures for concrete structures. His recent investigations have focused on numerical modelling and design applications of UHPFRC and FRC structures, recognized by 2018 ACI Construction Award.

Carlos LazaroAssociate Professor of Structural Mechanics in the Department of Mechanics of Continuous Media and Theory of Structures at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain.

He is a Vice-President and the Chair of the Technical Activities Committee of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS).

As a professional structural engineer, he has designed bridges and structures for large-scale roofs and buildings in several countries. His research interests cover the application of fibre reinforced concrete for architectural shells, the use of recycled concrete in bridges, the mechanical modelling of lightweight, deployable, and very flexible structures, and more recently, the design of structures using bending as shape-driving paradigm. Pedro Serna Dr Civil Engineer Full Professor at the UPV/ICITECH.  

Contributing to the first structural FRC and UHPFRC applications in Spain from its material conception, technology, and basis for the structural analysis.  

Collaborator in the introduction of these materials in Spanish codes and FIB Model Code 2010.

Chairman of the RILEM TC – CCF 261 on Creep in FRC, and Chairman of the next BEFIB 2021 RILEM – FIB Congress on FRC.
