Deformation behaviour of concrete highway pavements

Sam Foos, Viktor Mechcherine & Harald S. Müller (University of Karlsruhe, Germany)

In this paper, results of experimental and numerical investigations on deformations and stresses in concrete pavements subjected to practical weather conditions are presented. The numerical simulations of large concrete slabs under critical weather conditions and with boundary conditions corresponding to different field situations were performed using the finite element programme DIANA. In order to verify and to improve the numerical model and to calibrate some parameters of the model a series of large-size experiments on concrete slabs was carried out with the same loading conditions as used in the numerical study. The major purpose of these investigations is to develop a new design method taking into account the effect of weather conditions in addition to static and dynamic live.
