Mechanism of remedial measures against soil liquefaction by shear deformation constraint method

Discussion is made on how remedial measures against soil liquefaction by shear deformation constraint method works. At present, there is no relevant design method, and averaging the shear modulus in horizontal direction has been frequently used in order to evaluate shear deformation of the ground in the engineering practice. The soil element is shown to deform in the vertical direction in shear when shear deformation in horizontal direction is constrained by the stiffer underground structure, which weakens the effectiveness of remedial measures. This effect is significant when overburden stress is small, i.e., near the ground surface.
